I find smoking stories essential in helping those who are contemplating quitting that it surely can be done. Millions of people have a story to tell about their smoking experience. Every person you meet in life smoking tobacco has a story to tell just as many others who also once smoked. For some unfortunately they can't tell their own story. Someone has to tell it for them.
Altogether all smoking stories are a wealthy diary of the smoking world. The fears of individuals involved. Their resistance and often reckless living with cigarettes. All in all it adds up to lesson after lesson for those who will follow.
Stories of smoking also tell a unique story about the quitting smoking experiences of others. How they found success or failed with certain medication and stop smoking products. What worked for them and what disappointed them. What we can construct from all these stories is perhaps our own unique best way to stop smoking.
The most talked about stories are about the prominent names in the celebrity business. Even though these are only the tip of an iceberg, they help tell a picture of vulnerability, fear and uncertainty even for those who command a fatter purse in society. Most importantly they tell a story of admission from those looked highly upon by society of the dangers of smoking.
Smoking stories - Patrick Swayze
Patrick Swayze died of stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2009. He was a heavy smoker and drinker.
Pancreatic cancer is highly associated with carcinogens found in cigarette smoke.His lime light achievements included romantic films such as Dirty Dancing (1987) and Ghost (1990) amongst many others. Something remarkable about his life after cancer diagnoses is that he did not stop smoking even though he had fears for his life.
In one of the final interviews he was quoted as saying;
"There’s a lot of fear here. There’s a lot of stuff going on."
"Yeah, I’m scared. Yeah, I’m angry. Yeah, I’m asking why me. Yeah, I’m all this stuff."
"You can bet that I’m going through hell, and I’ve only seen the beginning of it."
He remarked that he had purposefully avoided smoking in front of young children. He was clearly alive to the dangers of smoking. He openly admitted that smoking could probably have contributed to the pancreatic cancer.
On quitting smoking he said;
“I’ve seriously cut down,” “I was one of those dumb ones that started back in the Marlborough Man days whose — you know, it was cool. I’m a cowboy. But I’ll tell you one thing. I will talk so hard core against, against smoking for kids. That’s one reason I’ve never smoked in front of children.”
When asked if he thought his smoking caused his cancer, Patrick said it may have had an effect. Patrick also said he continued smoking to lesson his daily battles with cancer.
“I’ve got… priorities,” he said. “It’s just I’ve been dealing with one thing as it comes at time, you know… in the… order that it’s trying to kill me. Will stopping smoking now stop anything, change anything? No. But, when it looks like I may live longer than five minutes, I’ll drop cigarettes like a hot potato.”
A sad and painful ending to an outstanding life with a lot of followers. Many of whom are teens.
