Perhaps smoking statistics presents one single opportunity that can bring smokers, decision makers, policy makers and communities in general to the stalk reality of smoking. The cost of smoking, the dangers of smoking, smoking deaths and the general destructive nature of tobacco usage become clearer and even more frightening. Some of the following statistics on smoking show by country patterns of smoking

Smoking statistics: General

  • In America there are an estimated 46 million smokers. 24.8 million are men (23.1%) and 21.1 million are women (18.3%)
  • China is the largest smoking country in the world with 350 million nicotine addicts. 60% of men in China smoke consuming trillions of cigarettes annually
  • 9.5 million British adults smoke cigarettes
  • 1 million British adults are into cigar smoking or pipe smoking
  • In the UK the largest smoking groups consist of those in the age group 20-24 years
  • In the UK in 2007 22% of young men aged 16+ smoked
  • About 51% of men smoke in Japan
  • About 44% of physicians in Japan smoke
  • There are 500 000 cigarette vending machines in Japan which teenage tobacco users can access
  • 50% of all Malaysian men smoke
  • 60% of men in the Philippines smoke

  • In the UK more than 114 000 people die of smoking diseases
  • 90% of lung cancer deaths in the UK are caused by smoking
  • 2600 Americans die everyday from cardiovascular diseases
  • Smoking causes 5% of deaths in Germany
  • Smoking on average reduces adult life expectancy by up to 14 years
  • Smoking causes 3.3 million years potential life lost for men and for women 2.2 million years.
  • A survey in China revealed that 60% of adults did not know smoking causes cancer while 96% were unaware it causes heart disease
  • Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths in Japan with 50 000 deaths per year
  • Studies have shown that lung cancer is raising at a rate of 17% per year in Malaysia

Statistics on Smoking: Economics

  • The Chinese government earns up to 8% in total national revenue from tobacco related taxes
  • Smoking deaths costs America $92 billion per year between 1997 and 2001 in lost productivity according to the CDC
  • Smoking related care costs in America add-up to $167 billion per year
  • Philip Morris America's largest tobacco company spent $3 billion dollar son advertising in 1996
  • In 97 in the United States the tobacco industry spent $15 million per day combined advertising
  • Street advertising of cigarettes in Cambodia rose by up to 400% between the years 1994 and 1997
