It is estimated that the Los Angeles County losses $4.3 billion per year due to tobacco related illness part of which is in direct medical costs. Stop smoking in Los Angeles is a big concern. A health survey in 2005 showed that over a million adults smoked cigarettes and of those over 500 000 had attempted to quit smoking in 2004. Quit smoking attempt were common in people under 50 years. Hopefully not an indication that those over 50 years had given up.
The Los Angeles County health department believes that proven cessation strategies such as counseling, telephone quitlines and others increase the odds of quitting and staying quit after you quit smoking.
Quit smoking Los Angeles was tuned up another notch with free nicotine patches. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and L.A Care Health Plan gave away 30000 quit smoking aids to people resident in LA County.
The free nicotne patches were being distributed by 47 participating Ralp Pharmacies in LA County. The nicotine patches come in starter pack kits also including nicotine chewing gum.
