People who died of smoking...an open record of the dangers of smoking.
People who died of smoking in the last several decades run into millions. A clear testimony of the dangers of smoking to a growing population of smokers especially amongst the teens. Most of the people who died from smokers that are talked about are celebrities, prominent people and role models in society. Yet the true picture is that millions others have died silently in hospital beds and in private homes.
Since 1964 approximately 12 million people have died of smoking tobacco. In addition an estimated 8.6 million people across the globe are in serious illness due to tobacco smoking.
In most cases it is said "people who died of smoking" referring only to the diseases caused by smoking. Another dimension to deaths linked to smoking is that of people who die in other circumstances related to smoking. In the United States alone up to 1000 smokers and non-smokers are killed in home fires attributable to cigarettes. Injuries caused by smoking are also sky high. As a result there are well funded smoking and home fires campaigns across the United States.
Jack Cassidy an award winning Broadway TV and movie actor died in 1976 from a fire started by his own cigarette in his apartment. Let alone the ravaging California and Australian fires some of which are thought to have been caused by smoldering cigarettes. These fires claimed the lives of hundreds of people.
Then there are people who died of smoking as a result of disease. Patrick Swayze died at the age of 57 as a result of stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was a life long cigarette smoker and a heavy drinker. Heavy cigarette smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer.
He was quoted as saying of his pancreatic cancer condition in light of his continued smoking;
“I’ve seriously cut down,” Patrick told Barbara [in an interview]. “I was one of those dumb ones that started back in the Marlborough Man days whose — you know, it was cool. I’m a cowboy. But I’ll tell you one thing. I will talk so hard core against, against smoking for kids. That’s one reason I’ve never smoked in front of children.”
