Nicotine overdose may lead to nicotine poisoning which in itself maybe life threatening. Used loosely overdose of nicotine maybe thought of as nicotine poisoning.

Nicotine is present in tobacco whether that tobacco is smoking tobacco or chewing tobacco or even snuff. It doesn't altogether matter how the tobacco is administered. Observation shows that people who suffer from overdose of nicotine are those who are trying to quit smoking.

This is mostly as a result of a failure to follow stop smoking product instructions. Most quit smoking products strictly prohibit continued smoking whilst on the medication. Cigarettes contain on average 1.2mg of nicotine. Stop smoking aids such as nicotine patches and nicotine chewing gum contain nicotine in lesser levels.

They are designed this way to help slowly wean a quitting smoker off nicotine. In other words nicotine contained in these products only helps to meet the minimal cravings for smoking. For this reason, some people who quit smoking tend to compensate the reduced nicotine in chewing gum for instance by taking more pieces of the gum per day than prescribed.

Others even go on to smoke whilst strapping on nicotine patches. This is what often causes nicotine overdose. To avoid overdose, product instructions must be adhered to the last drop. In fact taking more nicotine gum than prescribed may lead to nicotine gum addiction.

All smoking cessation products containing nicotine must be taken with caution. Even nicotine water may lead to poisoning when drank in excess.

Overdose of nicotine may also come about as a result of smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco at the same time. This increases the amount of nicotine in the blood stream and that entering the brain.

Overdose of nicotine is also common around the home of a smoker. Children, infants and even pets can be poisoned when they eat cigarette butts or bits and pieces of used nicotine gum. It is highly recommended to dispose these carefully to avoid accidents. When an overdose occurs it may be fatal due to poisoned muscles making it difficult for a person or animal to breath.

When an overdose occurs, it is of paramount importance to immediately contact a doctor in order to receive swift treatment.
